With extra money we can grow our show beyond the restrictions of a bare minimum budget, and meet our goals for the production’s future life. Extra funds would go towards:
- BSL interpretation for one performance (we are in touch with an interpreter)
- Further marketing to support our ambitions for this Fringe with Out of Hand.
- Mastering and distribution costs to help release songs from the show
- Rehearsal studio space (for gig theatre we need a few rehearsals where we have access to a full PA system)
- The future Mary tour
Who we are
Knot Tied Theatre is the home to collaborations between Katie Slater (Director and Co-Producer) and Rona Johnston (Writer and Mary), 2023 QMU graduates making feminist theatre with music at the heart of the storytelling.
Mary: A Gig Theatre Show
Mary was first created and performed by Katie and Rona as part of a gig theatre research project in 2022. Since then, the scratch presentations and one-night-only festival performances of the work have been met always with standing ovations and an overwhelming demand for more. Following a sold out show in February, Knot Tied Theatre are now presenting the Fringe debut of Mary: A Gig Theatre Show.
"Through haunting original music and rich spoken word, an actor-musician band deliver a feminist retelling of Mary Queen of Scots' story. The folk-rock show searingly questions the treatment and portrayal of women historically and today. Following a sold-out production in February, the Marys are back by popular demand for the Fringe. 'Fifty mesmerising minutes' **** (The Student Newspaper). ‘Lifting original songs and lyrically genius spoken word’ **** (CorrBlimey.uk). ‘The perfect blend of music, narrative and humour’ **** (TheBroad.org), ‘A total triumph - unbelievable talent, West End here they come…’ (Audience review, 2024)."

Our Fringe 2024 Fundraising Campaign
Bringing a show to the Fringe is a costly endeavour, but we think it's worth it to raise the profile of our wee show. We have big ambitions for this show to have a long life, and our week long run at the 2024 Fringe with theSpaceUK is just the beginning.
We are aiming to raise £1000 in total. £500 from this Fringe Makers site, and £500 from some events we are running. This money will go towards covering our venue hire fee, insurance and printing costs.
If we hit 50% of our total on this site (£250) we will release one song from the show. If we hit 100% of our total on this site (£500) we will another song from the show.
We really appreciate anything you can give to support new feminist Scottish gig theatre!
Long live Mary.
