A choreographic window into human relationships explored through movement.
It was pure chance that brought our dance duo together. Sarah the American/German/Italian dancer based in London and Phil the Canadian/Brit who had just landed in London. We met at a dance intensive and out of the blue decided to try partnering together and we both felt a movement spark ignite! Just for fun we began working on a 10 minute duet to see where it would go and after receiving amazing feedback on it, we realized it had the potential to become its very own piece.
Our goal is take a beautifully made and memorable duet performance to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Magnetoreception is a contemporary duet which stems from the concepts of magnetism, attraction and repulsion. While the initial movement was inspired by the forces of magnets moving away and towards each other, Philip and Sarah quickly realised how these concepts applied to their relationships with others and even with themselves. Very much like objects, we create, hold and emit energy that attracts us to our partners, friends and the better parts of ourselves. However, it is also a strong force that can attract people and behaviours that are toxic and can even cause us to repel parts of ourselves. With this duet we each learn to find ourselves again and how to navigate the relationships with people we have surrounded ourselves with.
We envision having our piece musically scored with original sound which is no small investment but can elevate a dance piece immensely and to help us pay for rehearsal space which can be quite costly in London. We have already been lucky enough to get some free space and are very grateful to the studios who helped us but we do need access to more.
Should we be fortunate enough to stretch our target we would love to hire a designer to help us with costumes, another performance element which can really help tie all the parts of a show together to tell our story. In addition we would love to hold free movement workshops to contribute to the London dance community.
