Help us get our original Scottish musical LAND to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2022!

Help us take LAND to the Fringe! After the success of our sold-out staged readings in October, we're ready to take on Edinburgh this summer! We've got some brilliant rewards to thank you for your donations - all of which goes towards paying fees such as venue costs, rehearsal space, marketing materials, travel & accommodation at the Fringe.

About the Show

LAND is a new folk musical that explores our relationship with the earth, death, and generational difference. It tracks two stories; one of a crofter and a wandering soldier in the 18th Century, and one of an old pensioner and his carer in the 21st Century. These two stories run parallel, intercut with song and poetry.

The piece questions identity, language, and shifting culture. It seeks to explore our heritage and legacy and weaves together comedy, music, poetry and narrative to tell its story.

LAND is a musical that fuses traditional Scottish trad/folk styles with a modern electronic sound to create its compelling soundtrack, performed live by the actor-musician cast of three.

LAND explores the cyclical nature of life and death, and above all celebrates compassion, despite rifts in belief or faith. It highlights how damaging isolation can be, particularly for older members of our communities, and asks that we take a second to look around and re-evaluate our relationships with the earth and climate.

But the land knows well enough,

That in the end,

The snow will frost the ground,

The rain will melt the snow,

The sun will dry the rain,

And the leaves will fall, again.

About Us

Kick the Door is a theatre & film production company based in Glasgow. Our key practice is in new writing, particularly in developing new musical theatre. Our key writing team of Bethany Tennick, Iona Ramsay, and Fraser Scott have been creating new musical theatre together for almost two years and have worked on a variety of projects. These include our large-scale folk musical Thread; now in co-production with Renfrewshire Leisure. We have also created two musical film pieces, including the award-winning A WALK IN THE PARK, which screened at Cannes Film Festival in 2021.

Fraser Scott - Director

Fraser (he/him) is a director and co-founder of Kick the Door. He is a graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and creates work in both film and theatre. Fraser's main practice focuses on creating and supporting new musical theatre, and is currently developing multiple live projects with Kick the Door. LAND will be the first time he takes a musical to the Fringe.

Bethany Tennick - Composer/Lyricist

Bethany (she/they) is a composer, lyricist, writer and actor and a graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Bethany has been writing with Kick the Door for over two years, and wrote the musical for their award-winning short film A WALK IN THE PARK, and our large scale folk musical THREAD. Bethany is most well known for her performance in Finn Anderson's ISLANDER, both here in Scotland and it's London premier at Southwark Playhouse. This will be Bethany's first show at the Fringe as a writer.

Iona Ramsay - Book Writer

Iona (she/her) is a writer and co-founder of Kick the Door. She graduated from St. Andrews University and has worked in youth theatre practice for most of her career; running regular workshops and classes at PACE Youth Theatre. Iona writes for stage, screen and prose, and has recently been shortlisted for the Scottish Book Trust New Writer's Award. Iona has been involved in every Kick the Door production and is buzzing to be taking LAND to the Fringe this year.

Jennifer Galt - Producer

Jennifer  (she/her) is a producer and theatre-maker from Glasgow. She produces for Framework Theatre Company and is one half of the creative duo False Start. She has recently taken part in The Old Vic Theatre Makers scheme and is currently working with National Youth Theatre curating a project with members from Scotland and North England. She is excited to be working with Kick the Door and can't wait to take this project to the Fringe.

How You Can Help

As a small company of emerging artists, we can't get to the Fringe without your help. Any donation, no matter how small, will go a long way in supporting us and our work. The Fringe is a big financial risk and isn't something we can take on ourselves. Part of our mission is in creating exciting new Scottish musical theatre and putting it in front of as many audiences as possible. The Fringe is an amazing opportunity to take our wee story to international audiences, and make global connections with our authentic and important Scottish story.

Thank you so much!
