Aim

I am bringing a one act play called "Forgotten" to the Edinburgh Fringe. It's a play about what happens to stories when they die.

My Background:
Hello my name is Richard Wright, I am 42 years old and have been performing and putting on shows in some way my whole life. I first attempted to write a play when I was 11-12 years old to impress a girl but never tried again until now. I have a degree in film and have performed stand up comedy since 2012. This years Edinburgh Festival Fringe will be my 10th year putting on a show at the fringe and my 12th year attending the fringe. I love comedy and enjoy running the Pegasus Comedy Awards. My stand up shows have been well reviewed and have drawn praise from fellow performers. I have always had a passion for theatre. I was a theatre kid growing up and spent lots of time doing the school musicals and shows. I also grew up in a church setting, this gave me lots of opportunities to explore performance which I am eternally grateful for. Over the years I have had the great and undeserving fortune to perform at venues like the Royal Albert Hall, Westminster Central Hall, Ulster Hall, Waterfront Hall and many other lovely theatre spaces around the country. Writing and directing theatre is a new direction for me but one I feel I have been preparing for my whole life. I believe in this play and hope you will consider joining me on this journey.

My motivation:
I really believe in this play,. Writing and directing a play is something I have wanted to do for a long time but I wanted it to be an idea I was passionate about. I firmly believe that in "Forgotten" I have found that project. My last few Edinburgh solo shows has been very story centered pieces and I love stories and and storytelling. I love the fringe with all my heart, it is my happy place and I love the theatre.  I believe the Edinburgh Fringe is the right place to put on this play.

The Play:
Forgotten is about what happens to stories when they die. A story dies when there is no way for a story to be told and there is no one left alive who remembers it. The play takes place in a bureaucratic organization whose job it is to deal with the characters from the stories that die. It's a slice of life in a very unusual setting dealing with an odd issue. We arrive into chaos as too many characters are arriving in to be processed. This creates the situation where our lead being asked to step out of her comfort zone and help out in a way that wouldn't normally be their job. We then meet Michael, a character from a story that has died, and the play is about his induction process, his coming to terms with what has happened and the decision he must make about what happens now.

The Run at the Fringe:
The play is being staged at Greenside on George Street, which is a fantastic venue for plays at the fringe. We are in the little 21 seat Sprout Studio, a new space for this years fringe. The show runs from August 7th to August 15th at 11:25am with August 7th being a preview. This will be my first time venturing into new town for a venue. I wanted the play to be in a venue that people know for theatre, that people knew to go to see plays. I am very happy to be working with Greenside and the small size will help create the right kind of atmosphere for the play. It also gives us the best possible change of selling out while also being the kind of size that if we don't it should be a nice atmosphere for the audience. There was a couple of chances the play to be a in a bigger venue but I didn't feel it was right for the play.

Why am I crowdfunding this?
Great question, I will love to tell you. I would love to do this properly and well. The fringe is incredibly expensive and I want to be able to do things like pay the cast, pay the crew, pay the person writing my press release for me. Props, public liability insurance, some limited original scoring, flyering, printing of flyers and posters. None of the money will go towards myself personally. It's not for my travel to the fringe, my accommodation or my living costs while at the fringe. This money is exclusively for the play. Here is a list of things that the money raised will be out towards and spent on:
1. cast and crew costs
2. public liability insurance
3. PR and marketing materials like posters, flyers, press release
4. original scoring

Things I have already paid for out of my own pocket for the play:
1. venue hire
2. Fringe registration
3: some Props

Here is a list of things that the money will absolutely not be spent on:
1. Me
2. Myself
3. I
4. Cake
5. Limited edition Allan Bennett slippers
6. Candles in the shape of the national theatre
7. Sending Uber Eats to David Mamet or anyone else
8. A balloon ride with Lin Manuel Miranda
9. A special award for Theatre from FIFA
10. A tenth thing for this list

if you have any questions please feel free to ask.
