Aim

Hannah's inspirational story should never be forgotten. We'd love to bring our Hannah show to Edinburgh Fringe 2021. You can make it happen.

Hi there,

Hannah Hauxwell, No Through Road is brought to you by poet Karen McDonnell and singer songwriter Shelagh McKay Jones

When Hannah passed away on the 30th January 2018 I was devastated.

Never having visited Hannah it had been my New Years Resolution to do so, but then Karen and I discovered we had a mutual obsession with this amazing lady and were both already writing about her. Creating a gig theatre production in her memory seemed like the only thing to do so we did :-)

Message us for a ten minute sample of our show or click this link "ten minute sample of show" :-)

After a great week long run of our show premiered at PBH's Free Fringe 2019 in The Street during Edinburgh Fringe 2019 and followed soon after by a performance at Barn at the Loch, Kinghorn, we were delighted to secure a full run with PBH's Free Fringe 2020 for our Hannah show for Edinburgh Fringe 2020 together with a tour of Yorkshire and Durham which should have taken place in May 2020.

We did make it to Low Birk Hatt in the middle of March for a planning meeting just days before Lockdown started but not put off by Covid-19 we immediately set about creating an online version of our show which is taking place daily in Facebook Rooms during Edinburgh Fringe 2020. Just follow the link to our facebook page to access our show. We're looking forward to welcoming you and we'll be most grateful for any donation you can make to help us keep Hannah's story alive for future generations.

With love and best wishes,

Shelagh & Karen

Hannah’s story, subject of many TV documentaries, has had us spellbound for decades.

This Gig Theatre Production from Karen and Shelagh is a delightfully thought-provoking mix of spoken word, song and visual imagery illustrating Hannah’s struggle with the elements through her life-enhancing uplifting story.

Reviews from 2019

Written specifically for the Edinburgh Fringe 2019 “No Through Road” received outstanding reviews such as:

“A beautifully sensitive piece chronicling the life of a remarkable woman.”

“The singing and poetry are beautifully matched to the visuals and it is an oasis of calm in the madness of the festival.”

“The show was amazing. This is the second time I’ve seen it and I’ve picked up extra little snippets that I hadn’t seen the first-time round. It’s just an amazing life…a long life and I would love to learn more about her.”

“No through road...the amazing story of Hannah Hauxwell, Daleswoman, portrayed in spoken word, original songs and film by Shelagh McKay Jones and Karen McDonnell. At Barn on the Loch, Kinghorn recently. A great night.”

“It was terrific. I knew about Hannah Hauxwell and I’ve always been very interested in her and I think it’s just great that you’re keeping her alive because it’s so important that females are kept alive in history because they disappear. So I think it’s wonderful that you’re doing what your doing and just keep doing it and your voice is amazing.”

“I thought the show was fabulous. I was really impressed with the film that was shown and I was impressed by how amazing she looked for the fact that she lived in the country, her skin was beautiful, her hair was beautiful, and she just seemed such a kind and gentle woman. I quickly looked at the book and realised that she lived a long life and she moved into the cottage at the end of it and she had a lot of fame in her time here. It’s amazing. I was quite upset when it ended. I was quite tearful when it finished….bits of it remind you of your own childhood and being brought in the countryside…sentimental…loved it.”

Show Details

The 55 minute show is a mix of new spoken word and original song interspersed with popular music from her life from the likes of Gene Austin, The Ink Spots, Roger Williams and His Orchestra, Edith Piaf and of course Vaughan Williams…which provide an opportunity to reminisce and for the audience to participate, visually illustrated by a pastiche of clips from the many TV documentaries and other relevant visual imagery.

The show can be extended to 90 – 120 mins by the addition of a workshop providing an opportunity for the audience to chat over a cuppa about Hannah, her life, how much life has changed etc…these stories being captured with the opportunity of sharing through social media channels.

To date the show has been performed through a seven-day run at the Edinburgh Fringe and an individual performance plus workshop at the Barn at the Loch, Kinghorn. Excerpts have been performed at sessions during Perthshire Amber, the Dougie MacLean Festival, whilst the songs have been sung at concerts, folk clubs and sessions throughout the UK.

We were delighted to have been invited to perform the show at numerous venues in the North of England and were looking forward to daily performances during a five-day tour of Yorkshire and Durham in May 2020 and of course our full run with PBH's Free Fringe 2020 but with your help we can make all of this and more happen in 2021.
