Help Ghouls Aloud take their debut show to the Fringe this year and reach as many people as possible!
Hello!
Elysium’s first seed was planted during an extraordinary conversation Milly fell into with a stranger, on the side of a suburban road on the outskirts of London on a balmy day in early autumn 2023. It was around the time that Kylie Minogue released ‘Tension’ the album. Or just after the felling of the Sycamore Gap tree. Or just before the genocide in Gaza started.
As that year and its harrowing events progressed, the content of that unexpected interaction seemed to grow more and more potent, allegorically, and the unsettling story of Elysium came into being.
Jessie and Milly are lifelong friends and as luck would have it, during a conversation in December 2023, it came out that Jessie was herself plotting a show around ghosts. And in that moment it made complete sense that they would join creative forces, becoming Ghouls Aloud, a new theatre company.
And here we are! With a new, musical ghost story on its way to the Edinburgh Fringe, performing at the illustrious Gilded Balloon for the whole month. It’s something that we both have dreamed of and are both still in a state of disbelief about. Gilded Balloon?! Pinch us.
We were really honoured when the Keep it Fringe fund chose us as recipients of one of their 180 £2,500 bursaries. And we were lucky enough to receive further funding from a small charitable trust so it has been incredible to have had so much support thus far.
But, famously, artists taking shows to the Fringe will lose money. From publicity to accommodation to tech support and equipment hire there is so much to pay for and as two freelance artists taking over a month away from paid work to do this, we are here, humbly, to ask for your help.
And asking for help in this climate, when the suffering in Gaza is so incalculably immense, feels preposterous. So let us caveat this crowdfunding page’s intention by saying that if you have cash to spare, please give it to any of these vital causes: Hanoon Foundation, Gaza Sunbirds, UNRWA and Camps Breakerz. Your money could mean the difference between life and death for a family in Gaza. And if, once you have donated to Gaza, you still have the good fortune of money to spare, please consider throwing some our way.
We know this show is important, in its message, in its originality and we know that it can grow into something even more powerful provided we manage to get the right people to see it
