Want to support budding queer artists and authentic queer representation? "Cherry" explores asexuality and presents many queer experiences.
ABOUT THE SHOW & US:
Fruitful Productions was founded in March 2023 with the creation of Cherry, a play written by Alice as part of the Drama Term 3 Festival at Exeter University. The production was performed to two sold out audiences in May 2023. We were so overwhelmed by the response of both the individuals involved and the audience reviews of the show and its affirming nature to queer audiences, that it drove us to pursue a wider audience for this impactful, accepting and educational show. We wish to contribute to the wonderful Fringe festival and give justice to the stage with our compelling, heartfelt story about a girl exploring her identity and navigating life with her friends.
Cherry challenges the notion of looking at “queer” as a fixed identity, as people are pressured to choose a label and stick with it. We want as many people as possible to experience the blanket of pure warmth, queer joy and acceptance that Cherry is.
ABOUT OUR CROWDFUNDER:
Cherry is all about inclusion, representation and acceptance. We want these themes to be present not only in our work presented to audiences, but also in the way we work. It is our aim as a company to make the Fringe festival as accessible as possible to people of all cultural and financial backgrounds, and we want to do so by providing all members of our cast and team with accommodation and travel absolutely free of charge.
We recognize that while Fringe is an amazing opportunity, it can be a dream that remains unfulfilled for many because of the economic barriers that make participation difficult. With our company being based in Exeter, travelling the distance to Edinburgh in itself is a huge financial burden for our members. So, we want to pay for our members’ accommodation and travel costs. However, this is obviously not a small amount of money, and as a start-up theatre company, our resources are limited.
For Cherry, accommodation is the biggest financial weight we are carrying. We are aiming to achieve our target of £2,000 to help us alleviate this financial challenge.
Here's a breakdown of our expenses, so you know exactly where your money is going:
Accommodation for 15 people in Edinburgh for the week of the show is £7,800. We have paid the deposit of £1,560 through limited external funding support. Our projected sales as a 55-seat venue performing for one week is £2,000. All the money from our ticket sales will go towards paying the accommodation costs. If we reach our aim of £2,000, that brings our accommodation costs down to £2,240, which brings our per person per night cost down to £18.6.
IF we hit our 2k target, any extra money will continue to go towards the accommodation and travel costs. We are not hoping - or expecting - to make any profit from the show; if we do, the money will go towards paying our actors for their valuable time and effort.
Your support means a lot to us! Even if you can't donate, sharing our crowdfunder on your social media will help! Hope to see you at Fringe, stay in touch!🍒
