To guide those dealing with loved ones suffering from dementia using anecdotal stories, humour, dignity and respect.
My mom's Alzheimers presented when she was 50. Early onset tied to childhood malnutrition. How is that even a thing?
That was the first of a million questions and things that didn't make sense.
My father and sister cared for my mom at home throughout the entire illness. Their navigation of the anger, confusion, sadness, depression, delusion and accusations exhibited by my mom left no time for them to deal with their own emotions and loss.
I use the word loss deliberately. We lost my mom when the Alzheimers progressed and again when she died 21 years later. When you add the grieving process to the navigation process, it's incomprehensible. And there's no rule book.
This play isn't a rule book, but it does have stories about how we coped and learned.
I have many friends now that are in a similar situation and this play is for them. The friends I know and the strangers I haven't met yet. Even if it's only a short reprieve and a couple of laughs, I hope it will help.
