ALEX - A New Musical

Six passengers find themselves stuck on a train after it breaks down. Confronted with their own past and present worries, they undergo a journey of self-discovery, each exploring their own concepts of seeking discomfort, friendship and love.

Musically supported by MD and pianist Tom Knowles and actor musician and woodwind player Tatjana Sandhöfer, ALEX follows a rollercoaster of emotions. The audience finds itself caught up with the characters, stuck in the middle of nowhere after their train breaks down. Confronting a group of people with an unexpected situation well outside of their comfort zones, taking the audience on a journey of life stories, music, friendship and love.

This project is our long-prepared debut at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, bringing an international mix of young performers together. Showcasing a wide variety of music from emotional ballads to energetic ensemble numbers embedded in a story that gives each character a moment to stand out and sweep the audience away with their own life story.

Support us now and help bring musical theatre back to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2021!

What's the plan so far?

We have written a script and large parts of the music, but are still pretty much at the point of organising everything to come (and who knows what there is to come?). Due to us all living spread out over multiple countries, we will be rehearsing digitally.

We will meet up in the flesh for the first time in the run-up to the Fringe, when we have an intensive rehearsal schedule planned to prepare for our run, which will go for the entire length of the Festival in August, where C venues have kindly offered us a place in their programme.

So we hope to see you all live or through livestreams at the Fringe Festival in August!

What is going to happen with the money donated?

Going to the Fringe is a costly endeavour, especially with an international team of performers. These are the main things we will use the money you donate for:

  • Transport: Getting everyone to Edinburgh and back home again
  • Accomodation: Renting out a place we can stay both during our rehearsals week and performances
  • Overhead costs: Insurances, PR material, any previously unexpected or unanticipated costs
  • Wages: Paying the performers and creatives a fair wage, or at the very least covering the costs encountered during their stay at the Festival
  • Livestreaming costs: Livestreaming the show will help make it accessible to many people who would otherwise not get the opportunity to see it. If we collect enough funds, we would love to invest in a professional live streaming service to give the viewers that can't come to Edinburgh in August the best possible experience

Who are we?

We are an international cast of young professional performers currently living throughout the UK and Germany. For many of us, this will be the first time working together in a full production, coming from diverse backgrounds ranging from opera and classical training to musical theatre and screen acting.

The heads of the production, Frederick and Tatjana, have worked on a number of projects over the past few years, both together and independently of each other. This includes an award-winning production of Stiles & Drewe's Peter Pan and Tatjanas debut as a writer The Girl in the Mirror at the University of Music Lübeck; Requiem für eine Bestie, a contemporary classical musical theatre piece with Frederick as Assistant Producer and MD. Most recent productions include mm/yyyy, a collaborative improv workshop between dancer, singers and instrumentalists at Trinity Laban's CoLab festival and Artist.I.Friend, an art film written by Tatjana.

ALEX is both the writing and composing debut of Frederick, and he has been actively working on it since January 2019.

We are all desperately looking forward to finding ourselves back on stage again and are looking forward to seeing you in the audience with us, to get together shake off the cobwebs we have grown in these last months.

Help us bring back the joys, energy and emotion of live theatre by donating today, and we promise to take you away on a journey we hope will be unforgettable for everyone!
