Help Noah and his Ark sail into Edinburgh Fringe!
Hello to my furry little cruisers! Thank you all so much for checking out our Ark-tastic fundraiser! Below is some information about my show and its wonderful but rightfully invisible crew! Love and Laducas, Noah x
2 BY 2 is a very stupid and very camp character-comedy show about Noah (of Biblical fame) and his Ark. It re-imagines the flood myth with Noah as a newly single gay man who thinks he’s embarking on his first cruise ship performer contract. Fleeing his old life (and ex-throuple) in search of a Cappella stardom on the Ark, Noah finds himself caught up in cosmic plans much larger and apocalyptic than he could have anticipated. The worst part? He’s surrounded by animal couples, alone at sea.
Inspired by questions like, “In a world of mass suffering, why am I one of the few privileged to survive?”, “Is there any hope for a society so selfish and indifferent?”, and “Did God intend for us to be polyamorous, or is it just wrong?”, 2 BY 2 really hits at the hardcore topics in life. The show was also conceived through a revelation that we (queers, horrible gays, and our adjacents) are just as entitled to exploit Biblical literature for our own purposes and morals as those who seek to exploit it for hatred. But this is a comedy!!
After some wonderful shows at Camden People’s Theatre and Seven Dials Playhouse in March, we’re bringing 2 BY 2 to Edinburgh Fringe with Underbelly, which is truly a dream come true for us and we couldn’t be more grateful for the Underbelly team for the opportunity and such a perfect time slot for this show!
You can find us at the Daisy in Bristo Square every day at 8:45 PM, and in the meantime you can find more info here: https://www.edfringe.com/tickets/whats-on/nathaniel-jones-2-by-2
2 BY 2 came from a place of contending with humanity’s existential love affair with nihilism and indifference when confronting the atrocities and injustices of the modern world. For me, it often feels pretty suffocating and overwhelming, and so I wanted to write something that reminded me, and those around me who are prone to feel the same, that there is no choice but to persist and try to make things better. In fact, as our story discovers, it was a hefty command from the Big Guy that we do so.
The show looks back at a mythical time when humanity supposedly became so awful that its Creator decided the only solution was to start again. In 2 BY 2, we see Noah face the reality of that catastrophic event, and take another look at what God’s promise to never flood the world again really means. (This all makes the show sound really serious, most of it is me crossdressing and acting the fool.)
So far the show has been funded by our personal savings and ticket sales from previous shows/scratch nights. However, with three months to go until Fringe, we still have so much to factor in, from costs for marketing, press, travel, accommodation, to the smaller yet vital things like emergency backup props, wigs, and technician’s fees. Unfortunately, owing to the recent and devastating liquidation of Seven Dials Playhouse, we will now also be without the ticket sales from our nearly sold out show there, which is what’s finally pushed us to start this crowdfunder. All and any donations you can make will help us to cover these hugely important parts of production, and help us to make this show and its run at Fringe a certified smash hit!
Nathaniel Jones - Writer/Performer
Hello! I’m Nathaniel, a comedy writer and performer from Manchester, now living in London. Although not always intentionally, my work tends to focus on history and/or religion, and I’m particularly interested in the construction of culture based on (mis)interpretations of historical texts. Usually this is to examine and re-evaluate something terribly misunderstood, but with this show, I shall be the one to use historical text for my own self absorbed purposes :)
I’m currently on The London Library’s Emerging Writers Programme, as part of their screenwriting cohort. Recently, I wrote and performed in ‘Philos & Amica Do Time’ (Riverside Studios) a comedy two-hander about a timeless friendship and the struggle to make art. Previously, I took ‘Sing, River’ to Edinburgh Fringe (Pleasance Courtyard), which was a one-man folk musical paralleling prehistoric Britain and clouded personal history.
Sam Smith - Director
Hello adventurers! I’m Sam, a writer, director and theatre-maker with work spanning dance-theatre, devising and new writing. In a fierce! lapse of judgment, I am returning to my roots as a children’s theme park entertainer and joining forces with ar Nathaniel for this new! Biblically accurate! God-honouring! faithful-to-the-source-material! comedy extravaganza!!!
Alongside being Noah af, I am writing and directing a brand new coming of age trilogy, OLDER, for Riverside Studios. I’m also assistant facilitating Burnt Orange Theatre’s ZEST: a free playwrighting program for new writers aged 16-25. I’ve also made work for Camden People’s Theatre, The Place, The Hope Theatre, Stanley Arts, Siobhan Davies Studios, and the toilets at my old uni (not a joke x).
I am the founder and artistic director of Mad Jacks Theatre. We are co-producing 2 BY 2.
